The polls are closed across Massachusetts. And now the waiting begins. By the time the final ballots are counted, voters across the Bay State will have chosen the candidates for the Nov. 5 general election.

With early voting already in the books, the polls opened for in-person voting across the state at 7 a.m. They closed at 8 p.m.

Here’s a rundown of the key races we’re watching this Primary Election Day:

Republican U.S. Senate primary:

Three Republicans: Cryptocurrency lawyer John Deaton, of Swansea, Quincy City Council President Ian Cain, and conservative activist Robert Antonellis, of Somerville, are squaring off in a three-way primary this Election Day.

The Associated Press called the race for Deaton on Tuesday night, teeing up a race between him and Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, of Cambridge, in the Nov. 5 general election.

The Massachusetts Legislature

Most Massachusetts state lawmakers are going to coast to re-election this fall. All 40 seats in the state Senate and 160 seats in the state House are on the general election ballot.

2nd Bristol/Plymouth: Mark Montigny vs. Molly Kivi (Democratic primary)

3rd Bristol/Plymouth: Joseph Pacheco vs. Barry Sanders (Democratic primary)

Hampden: Adam Gomez vs. Malo Brown (Democratic primary)

The Governor’s Council

There’s a surprisingly vigorous primary for this Colonial-era throwback that nonetheless serves a low-profile, but very important purpose in state government: It acts on pardons and commutations; confirms judicial nominations, and gubernatorial appointments to a host of boards and commissions, according to the state’s website.
